HB 2133 Maintaining Privacy of Student Education Records

In an earlier post called A Bill to Look at Privacy Rights of Washington Students you were told about a legislative bill that has been pre-filed. That bill is now HB 2133 Maintaining Privacy of Student Education Records.  You can now download a pdf of the bill and track the history of the bill on the official Washington State Legislature website at
http://apps.leg.wa.gov/billinfo/summary.aspx?bill=2133.

Please ask your legislators to Pink Slip (cosponsor) HB 2133.  It is my understanding that cosponsoring will not occur until January but contacting your reps now is important as it will help them be aware of the bill and give them time to read the bill.

If your State Representative is on the Education committee, please ask them ever so nicely to urge the Chair to give this bill a hearing.  The more the Education Committee members hear from constituents about a bill, the more likely it will be given a hearing.  Teachers and parents are especially encouraged to contact committee members.

This link will provide you with contact information for the House Education Committee Members:
http://www.leg.wa.gov/House/Committees/ED/Pages/MembersStaff.aspx.

Phone numbers are provided.  If you click on a committee member’s name it will take you to a page with a link to send them an email.
