Learning More

I am often asked for information about the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and related issues. I have put together a one-page handout to give people who want to learn more about the CCSS and related issues. It starts off with general information and progresses to a more in-depth look at some of the issues.

Being knowledgeable about the issues is key.  There has been an increase in the number of “myth debunking” articles by CCSS proponents.  They knew there would be some resistance to the CCSS but I don’t think they anticipated it being as widespread or by people who have done their homework.  Part of the strategy of the CCSS proponents is to marginalize opponents.  Some of the strategies used to marginalize CCSS opponents include character assassination, categorizing/stereo typing individuals and groups, and repeating the same pro-CCSS promotional boilerplate blather without anything to back it up with (if it is repeated often enough it must be true…  isn’t that right?).  More often than not, I see CCSS opponents presenting a position from having done their homework and making statements and providing information sources supporting their statements.

I encourage you to inform yourself about the issues.  Rather than believing what everything you are told to believe, find out for yourself.  What you find out may be different that the school officials and politicians may tell you.
